British Conservatives seek leader


NARRATIVE – The race for the leadership of the Tory party has begun, following the electoral rout in July and the withdrawal of Rishi Sunak.

You have to love rebuilding ruins. The six contenders for the leadership of the Conservative Party will have the tough task of rebuilding a party that is in very poor shape. The competition has just been launched to replace Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who stepped down after the cruel electoral defeat wiped out in early July. It will be a fight of individuals, but also a battle over the line to follow in the years to come as the party appears disoriented and worn out after fourteen years in power.

The race will really begin on Wednesday, with the first vote to eliminate one candidate from the six in the running. Another will take place the following week, to whittle the list down to four candidates, who will try to win the support of activists at the Conservatives’ annual conference in early October. The party’s 121 MPs will vote to select two finalists, who will ultimately be decided by a vote in October…
