Cabinet reshuffle in Ukraine: Parliament approves Sybiga’s appointment as Foreign Minister


Other appointments are expected in what has been described as the biggest cabinet reshuffle since the war began. For Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the decision to change the heads of several ministries stems from a need for “new energy” for the country

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, approved on Thursday the appointment of Andriy Sybiga as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Shortly before, the unicameral parliament accepted the Dmytro Kuleba’s resignation: MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced this, adding that 240 of more than 450 deputies voted to accept his resignation.

During the voting, 258 MPs voted in favour of Sybigano one against. Since April 12 he was Deputy Foreign Minister, he will replace Dmytro Kuleba in the cabinet reshuffle decided by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Others who resigned included Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Olga Stefanishyna, Justice Minister Denys Malyuska, Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, and Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin.

Parliament will still have to vote on their resignations before appointing the other ministers.

Olga Stefanishyna, who resigned as Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, will be Justice Minister.

Among others, the new Ministry for Strategic Industries will most likely be led by Herman Smetaninfrom June 2023 to head the defense company Ukroboronprom. Vereshchuk will be transferred to the President’s Office, where she will serve as deputy director. Kamyshin may be appointed as an advisor to the president in the arms and defense division.

As for Dmytro Kuleba, according to some sources, he could focus on strengthening relations with NATO.
