France: Macron Appoints Michel Barnier as Prime Minister

The long-awaited nomination has arrived France. President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Michel Barnier as Prime Minister. He has entrusted him with the task of forming a united government at the service of the country and the French people.

This appointment comes after an unprecedented round of consultations during which, in accordance with his constitutional duty, the President ensured that the Prime Minister and the incoming government meet the conditions to be as stable as possible and give themselves the opportunity to bring together as many people as possible.

The handover at Matignon between outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his successor Michel Barnier will take place on Thursday at 6pm.

Who is Barnier?

73 years old, former European negotiator for Brexit and former candidate for the 2022 presidential elections, Michel Barnier is the new French Prime Minister. Always loyal to the Republicans, his CV also includes the vice-presidency of the European Commission, with responsibility for the internal market and services, and the co-presidency of the organization of the Albertville ’92 Winter Olympic Games. His career has seen him hold roles as minister and deputy under several presidents, François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy.
