How Ukraine Became One of the Greatest Paralympic Nations Despite the War


DECRYPTION – Since the early 2000s, Ukraine has consistently been among the top six nations in the medal table at both the winter and summer Paralympic Games.

With forty-five medals, including nine gold, before the end of the competition, Ukraine has already largely exceeded its Olympic results for the month of August (12 medals including three titles). However, with the current seventh place, the country is aiming for much better by the end of the week.

Since 2004, Ukraine has never finished lower than sixth place. The country even came third in the medal standings in 2006 and 2016. In Rio, it even overtook the United States, a regular on the podium at the Olympics.

The young nation, which experienced its first Paralympics in 1996, has won 152 titles in just eleven editions. By comparison, Italy has won three fewer in twice as many participations.
