Nga Wai Hono and Po Paki She is 27 years old and is called upon to fill a predominantly ceremonial role which, however, is also acquiring a political-social dimension in a context of growing tensions with the conservative New Zealand government.

The new queen succeeds her father, King Tuheitia, who died last week after 18 years of reign. The investiture ceremony took place in Ngaruawahiain the’North Island of New Zealand where, at the culmination of days-long funerals, warriors carried the coffin of the King Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VIIcovered in fur, in a canoe down the Waikato River to the sacred mountain Taupiri, the burial site.
