Black voters, crucial support for Kamala Harris’ campaign


DECRYPTION – While the African-American electorate is overwhelmingly in favor of the Democratic cause, Joe Biden has lost popularity among these communities. Can Kamala Harris’ candidacy change the situation?

Joe Biden was proud of it. He had repeated it over and over again, until he got tangled up: “I am proud to be the first vice president, the first black woman, to serve a black president,” he said in an interview given on July 4 on a Philadelphia radio station. The Democratic president was referring to his past as vice president under Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, but also to the ethnic identity of his running mate Kamala Harris, the daughter of a Jamaican and an Indian-American. A source of pride for the Democratic president, while his party traditionally takes for granted the support of more than 80% of African-American voters in the country.

Yet under Joe Biden, this support for the black vote has eroded, crossed by fault lines related to age and gender. While women remain massively loyal to the Democratic Party, young black men seem increasingly tempted by the Republican Party…
