“We are witnessing a political growth crisis in Algeria”

INTERVIEW – The historian invites us to analyze the upheavals of the last few decades in the broader context of the creation of the Algerian state.

Michel Pierre is the author ofHistory of Algeria. From the origins to the present day (Tallandier, 2023). A history graduate, he was a cultural attaché at the French embassy in Algeria from 1988 to 1992 and cooperation advisor from 2001 to 2005.

LE FIGARO.- Since 1962, Algerian heads of state have come to power following historical accidents (coups d’état, black decade, deaths, resignations, etc.). Is the political accident a fatality for the presidential destiny in Algeria? ?

MICHEL PIERRE.- I am not sure that political upheavals of this type are specific to Algeria. Over a period of about sixty years, we are witnessing a crisis of political growth in a process of creating a State. If we take the same time scale for France, for example between 1789 and 1849, we have a first revolution (1789), an empire, a restoration, a new revolution (1830) and a new dynasty, a third revolution (1848) and a new Republic.
