Donald Trump assassination attempt: Volodymyr Zelensky condemns “political violence,” Kremlin sees it as intensification of campaign

“I am glad to hear that Donald Trump is safe and sound,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted: on Xthe day after the alleged assassination attempt against the former American president on Sunday. “The rule of law is paramount and political violence has no place anywhere in the world”he further assured. According to American media, the suspect is an American who wanted to fight in Ukraine against Russia.

A senior Ukrainian official told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the man, Ryan Wesley Routh, had no links to the Ukrainian government. “He didn’t serve here [dans l’armée ukrainienne] and has no connection with state structures, that’s for sure.”said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The man, who had traveled to kyiv in support of the Ukrainian people in 2022, “had entered Ukraine as an ordinary person, (…) as there are many of them”the official said. In a similar vein, the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, which is made up of foreign volunteers fighting for Ukraine, assured that the American suspect had never served in its ranks.

For its part, the Kremlin said it saw this assassination attempt as a sign of an intensification of the electoral campaign for the presidential election in November. “We are of course closely following the information coming to us from the United States, we see how tense the situation is there, including between political rivals, the political struggle is intensifying and various methods are being used.”said Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian presidency, during his daily telephone briefing with Russian and foreign media.
